Maintaining an appropriate balance between activity and rest is crucial at this time of year. As in nature, winter is a time for us to slow down, restore and conserve our energy in preparation for the year ahead. If we honour and support this quiet internal period, we are more likely to burst forth healthily in the Spring as witnessed in the life force of a bud or a seed following a period of rest and inner conservation.
According to the Five Element Cycle within Traditional Chinese Medicine, the season of winter is related to the Water element with its many associations such as the emotion of fear but also the potential for courage and will power. The associated organs are the Kidneys which are a storehouse for our vital essence or Jing. This essence relates to our genetics and governs growth, reproduction, ageing and our constitution.

“I’d missed a number of sessions of Taiji Qigong with Carmela, but Friday I made it. What a joy. The beautiful surroundings and the chance to completely ‘let go’ of all the worries. I felt so much better afterwards. The sequences are gentle and Carmela guides you through each one in her own special, non-pressurised way. These classes are really life-enhancing. Thank you Carmela.” Ann, Newport
